Trot Online Rules

Trot Online was created so that people can discuss horses in a friendly, fun, helpful environment. The forum is open to the public but we reserve the right to restrict access for those who undermine our efforts to preserve the character of the community.

Registration is not necessary for the public to access this Web site. However, members must register in order to post on the Web site. During registration, you must complete the registration form and create a user name and password. During registration you are required to give us contact information. We may use this information to contact you about the services on our site in which you have expressed interest. We are the sole owner of the information collected on this Web site.

Starting threads:

Please choose the title to reflect the content - people often skim the titles and a meaningless title like "Help needed" will not attract readers. Title the thread something more appropriate that says what you need help with. This way you are more likely to get a response and other users that have the same question or problem may not start parallel threads.

No adult themes. The exception to this rule being conversation over private horse matters such as sheath cleaning and breeding. Any topics about this must remain clean and mature.

Advertising is restricted to the Classified ads forum - there is no charge for adverts so no advantage to posting them elsewhere. Threads and posts here have to be approved by a moderator or admin (to avoid undesirable ads appearing) so there is a delay between posting and the post appearing on the forum. Members also have to have a post count greater than 50 to post here (to deter people joining just to advertise).

Replying to other people's threads:

Please respect all members and their beliefs. If you don't agree with something then feel free to state your point of view but please don't rubbish their approach or make derogatory comments about them. Remember that you will not necessarily have all the relevant information about the horse or the situation.

Personal attacks will not be tolerated and will result in an infraction being given (see below)

If you have an issue with another user do not bring it to the public forums. Settle your dispute via PM.

Removing posts:

Removing your posts would ruin the threads they are a part of. For that reason, once you post, your posts become a part of Trot Online and will not be removed.

Reporting posts:

Members are encouraged to report any post they are uneasy about - occasionally spammers get past the membership application filtering and post odd things - e.g. "click on like to see the content of this message" - do not respond to these posts, just report them using the button on the post.

If it becomes evident that a member has been making things up, and a determination is made that other members' time and energy has been wasted as a result, that member's access may be restricted. Similarly, if there is reason to believe that two members are the same person, one or both members may have their access restricted.

The use of inappropriate or offensive language is not permitted in these forums. Inappropriate or offensive language includes, but is not limited to, any language or content that is sexually oriented, sexually suggestive or abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, profane, hateful, or that contains racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable material of any kind.

Bear in mind that we have young registered members and no control over guests who may read the forum.

There is a swear filter in operation on the forum - deliberate use of stars or other characters, misspelling of swear words or abbreviations is considered avoidance of the filter and will attract an infraction.

Please spell out your words. For example: Say "You are" or "Your" instead of "ur", and say "to" instead of "2", etc. Keep in mind, that not all members of this forum speak English as a first language, it is already hard enough for them to translate our slang terms but the text-speak makes it a lot harder for them, since there is no way to translate it.

Do not type in all caps, or in alternating caps, or use excessive exclamation points or question marks.

Posting pictures:

If a member chooses to post a picture to be critiqued, the member is required to only post pictures of themselves and of no other person.

Do not post proof photos, they are typically labelled as such when they are offered for sale. If you've purchased an image from a photographer, please wait until you have the non-proof version of the image before posting it.

Posts containing photo proofs are subject to removal and repeated violations may result in restricted access.

Posting links:

Members may link to any other site that provides information that helps answer another member's question or is just of general interest to members of that particular forum.

PLEASE NOTE Any links posted requesting financial assistance for charities or sponsorship are not any responsibility of Trot Online, members are reminded that they are individually responsible for any donations they contribute to outside links and are advised to check and satisfy themselves of the authenticity of appeals before making any financial contributions.

The chat rooms:

These form part of the forum and are subject to the same rules but because of the live nature please do not discuss other members or their horses unless the members are present in the room at that time.

Most forum software comes with a system for contacting members about issues that can be used instead of or in tandem with the private messaging system. Some infractions carry point values that result in a temporary ban if a member accrues enough of them. Details are included in the message to the member concerned. Continued contraventions my result in a permanent ban.

Failure to follow the above rules can result in a temporary, or permanent banning.

The role of Administrators and Moderators:

The forum is overseen by a team of administrators and moderators, it is up to their judgement to protect the forums and uphold these rules. If you feel you have been wronged, send a Private Message to the Administrator or Moderator that you believe to have wronged you and state in a mature manner why you believe you have been wronged. They also have the right to edit your post to take out an offensive statement, or delete your post/thread if they feel you have broken the rules.

Admins & Moderators will post on the forum in red text to indicate when they are acting in an "official" capacity rather than expressing an opinion as a member.

If you need help to use the forum or are experiencing problems with access then contact any member of the Admin/Mod team - their names appear in red on the forum.

Appointment of moderators:

New moderators are identified by existing moderators, self nomination or nomination by other members. The member concerned will be approached to see if they are interested and willing to undertake the task.

If so the existing admin & moderating team will then discuss this taking into account such things as:

The number and quality of posts the member has made to the forum.

Whether they have knowledge relevant to the forum subject.

Whether they are likely to apply common sense and mature approach in deciding what is and is not acceptable, and so on.

If the candidate is considered suitable then the appointment will be made, or if there is more than one nominee then the one felt to be most suitable will be appointed.
