Default Kissing spine/ back problems and driving

A while ago I toyed with the idea of breaking dusty to harness as I am to heavy to ride him and he is bored and needs a job.
An experienced old driver I asked said he would not put a horse with back problems to harness.
Would you agree with this ? I would not say that he has many issues with his back, other than an inherent weakness left from the operation, hence the reason I feel I am to heavy for him.
He is happily in light work with a 8 stone rider , but my other boy is lame , which I feel maybe a long term problem, so my thoughts have turned to how dusty and I can work together.
I was also advised that a two wheel trap would be worse for his back than a four wheeler, but this does not seem to tally up with what I have read.
Any advice yes or no would be most welcome

I know NOTHING about driving but would have thought it if you have a light trap it would be easier on the back than being ridden
