I have a bay pony, who I had pre the passport scheme. When it first came in I had her passport accurate as bay, yet they have logged her on NED as brown, despite her passport saying bay. I notice that the insurance companies do this too. They have a few basic colours and then they expect you to comply to the nearest one. I think that passports now are significantly better, but the insurance companies can still be useless. I called up to insure one of mine and had the following conversation:

Insurer: "And what colour is Sox?"
    Me: "Buckskin blanket spot"
Insurer: "Sorry, what colour is Sox?"
    Me: "Buckskin blanket spot"
    *Pause*
    Insurer: "Buckskin blanket spot?"
    Me: "Yes that's right"
Insurer: "I've not got a box for that! Is he brown?"
Me: "No, he's not brown, he's buckskin blanket spot!"

I think their 'brown' box is the get out of jail free card for them!

Alfie is most definitely brown. His tail is described as multi colour on his passport
