I still think they are overly fussy though - unless you had every foal genetically tested then how would you know 'true' colour?

Thank goodness mine are all black
I think in many cases there are indicators such as the paler bits I mentioned.

Lol.... What is trigger then? fairly confident troika is bay with pangare...

He is dark brown in summer, black mane and tail. black in winter except he has light brown round his mouth and eyes.

I was taught that bays have a dark muzzle and those with a light or 'mealey' muzzle were brown with black points.

D was a proper bay as he has a dark/black muzzle, he was bright bay. E was technically brown with black points as she had a mealy muzzle

That's probably chanhed now though but that was how I was taught the distinction all those years ago

Listen, smile, agree and then do whatever the hell you were going to do anyway.

    Summer coat:

Couple of weeks ago - he will darken off more than this, his coat goes extremely dark and looses its dapples:

I'd love to know more about colours!

Haha - how interesting I've always referred to him as dark bay cus thats what it says in his passport. Lol!

Google says he is "seal brown" which looks to be pretty accurate to me:

So ten points to Clava cus he is brown not bay!!
